Expedition Training
The aim of West Leigh's Duke of Edinburgh's Award Group is to enhance our young peoples' lives by giving them 'access to life in abundance' - that is giving them opportunity to experience serving, and training for it, developing skills, and working hard at it, developing healthy lifestyles, by challenging themselves to 'go further', and preparing for a journey, understanding all the things needed for that journey to come to fruition. We as adults would do well to mirror these qualities. Quite simply it is the Leader Team's mission to impel them into experiences, which will create the fully-orbed young person.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities, designed to support the personal and social development of young people aged 14-25, regardless of gender, background or ability. It offers an individual challenge and encourages young people to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities iin their free time.
The Award is a five-Section Programme with three progressive levels:
Bronze (for those aged 14 and over)
Silver (for those aged 15 and over)
Gold (for those aged 16 and over).
The sections involve:
Service (helping other people in the local community)
Skills (covering almost any hobby, skill or interest)
Expedition 15 / 30 / 50 miles for each of the Bronze, Silver, Gold, elements - in progressively more wild landscapes, 'under your own steam', having gone through a series of training and practice expeditions instructed by nationally qualified and experienced leaders.
Physical Recreation (sport, dance and fitness).
Residential Project (Gold Award only) (a purposeful enterprise with people not previously known to the participant.

Each person will need to Register through the Award Team Leader: Barry Howard - and choose which of the four parts of the programme they would want to start with. There will be a substantial amount of personal time spent on these programmes and each person must manage this time accordingly. We will meet regularly though not necessarily each week.
Welcome to : Helen, Beth, Heather, Joe, Josh, Gareth, Bob, Hannah, Tom, and Katie!!!
Our first meeting was on Thursday 11th January. All further meetings will be bi-weekly (every other week!) on Fridays at 7 pm in the Old Church Hall. The programme is to sort Service and Skills for each person, decide on who wants to tackle the Silver Award instead of starting with Bronze (more sensible if you are in any examination year at school) and start the Expedition [Theory] training which will be run by Barry, Sam, and Andy.
Adult Asst. Leaders have yet to be appointed; Registration will take place in the next fortnight (ie up until the end of January). All contact through Barry, or Beth (for obvious reasons!)
BJH.
